I like how companies like Buy.com, Gateway, and Symantec didn’t pull their punches with a straight forward approach saying, “Here’s the cost!”. I’d feel a little more comfortable spending my valuable mouse-clicks on these emails than others that try to creatively attract my attention.
Another interesting thing with a few of these examples is that they seem to try to drive traffic to a particular feature within their site. For example, Target.com – “Adore your abode: Free shipping on select furniture”, and Rent.com – “Find Your Mover through Rent.com”, each address a specific feature. That sort of straight forward messaging would be pretty effective on me.

Great catches! I think I’m like you and prefer to be treated like a human and not an idiot. So be straightforward with me and not crazy in my face. Also, I think the personalized messaging (sending to a specific section within the site) is a really nice touch!
