“We’re The Man” – DeclareYourself.com

The creators of “Reno 911” have put their creative talents together for these hilarious series of Internet videos.  They’re promoting, in an extremely sarcastic way, the effort to get younger Americans to vote.  Characterized by two middle-aged, balding white men, “the man” laughs at how much money they have and what beautiful women are at their side.  In fact, they are actually thanking 18 year olds for not voting so that they can continue exploiting capitalistic America.

The Man - Declare Yourself

Nobody has figured out the winning formula for getting 18 year olds to vote but these clips seem to be a good start.  They have immersed them into the hip culture by posting them to You Tube, creating a page on MySpace and partnering with some of the biggest names on the web.  Very Web 2.0!  Also, the point is made clear with a sarcastic tone that is commonly associated with the rebellious age.  You can view these and other attempts at reaching the newest wave of voters at www.declareyourself.com.

Why do I feel like not voting after watching these videos? Oh that’s right, because they are just like all the anti drug ads. So hip they’re lame.

These spots were really well-written and they are actually kind of fun, however, I don’t think they are going to convince 18-year-olds to vote. Have you watched any of the 2008 debates, either Democrat or Republican? Who can blame anyone for being turned off, let alone 18-year-olds? President Bush’s approval rating is in the 20s (shouldn’t it be called a ‘disapproval rating’ at this point?) and Congress’ is even less! Almost every day there is a new episode of corruption, bribes and scandals (Oh my!).

I think 18-year-olds are the SMART ones here. Our Founding Fathers would roll over if they saw the constitutional rights abuse, Pentagon costs, billion-dollar lobbying efforts from big oil and pharmaceutical, power trips, egos, environment deterioration, and do-nothing agendas in today’s political arena. The CIA has become the CYA. And clearly, our representatives are no longer interested in a government “for the people.”

Short of a Barrack Obama surge in the polls, I think you can kiss the younger votes good-bye. Watching these stuffed-shirt, out-of-touch millionaires “debate,” which isn’t even a true debate: rather pre-determined questions are asked by a moderator and each candidate has a chance to blather, er uh, respond. This offers no hope at all for a young person. Why bother? If you’ve watched the debates, the only candidates who are really telling the truth are those who have absolutely no chance of winning (Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich, et al), which makes for a sad, sad day in Americana.

It kind of amazes me that young adults can watch their friends go to a bunk war and get killed… and not vote. You’re probably right that it will be tough to get younger kids to vote but perhaps there is a lack of education. These same non-voters work in our country, live in our country and then refuse to be a part of the process. That doesn’t even make sense. It will never be their process if they refuse to vote.

We don’t need a “chicken or the egg” debate here when 18 year olds (who have friends and family) are dying in Iraq every day. Oops, there went 34 more today in Bhagdad. Don’t those soldiers have friends?

If you want people to vote tell them that they have to work to mid May to pay off their total tax burden for all of those crafty government income redistribution programs. Seriously. Do the math. Calculate your total tax burden. Social Security tax, Medicaid tax, State tax, Income tax, Federal tax, Property tax, and those embedded taxes in everything you purchase. And please spare us the part about people not voting. Leave them stay home. The most dangerous thing to this country are ignorant citizens that DO vote. Leave them stay home. Hell make it law that if you are on welfare and are unable to live on your own without the help of govt income redistribution programs then you have NO right gumming up the works because we all know they just vote for those who pander and promise more free stuff of the hard work of other people. They are nothing more than adult children.

A few years ago the IRS wanted to impose a 1% “annoyance tax” on my puns and jokes. Actually, they built an incredibly strong case for it, so I complied.

Sweet! So you’re proposing that we don’t vote and don’t work. That will really show “the man” won’t it! Gee, I wonder why so much work is getting outsourced to India and China. Hmmmm.

“We” don’t vote or work? Um no. Just those that can not provide for themselves. Please re-read. And we actually like to work because we know living off someone else’s dime means we lose part of our freedom every time we give someone else more control over what we say, how we say it, what we do, how we do it, where we go, how we go and so forth. I work because I can and I am the only one who knows best how to spend my earned money. No I’m not a “fortunate” person because I have money. I EARNED it and it’s mine.
